OVERVIEW

This home page gives a brief preview of the sites we have posted about my late father, Joseph Appleyard.

Joe, a prolific artist from the mid 1930's to his untimely death in 1960, kept extensive records which has enabled us to showcase so much of his work.

These sites contain photographs, published works, sketches, drawings, book illustrations and newspaper articles. Our ongoing research we hope will provide continued pleasure to those of you who choose to explore further and eventually enable a major exhibition of Joe's work to be staged.

2006 saw Joe's work brought to a wider audience with the publication of a short Biography in the "DOWN YOUR WAY" Magazine, a monthly nostalgic look at Yorkshire.

We would appreciate your comments and thoughts, both about these sites and particularly about Joe's work.

If you have, or know of the whereabouts, of any of Joe's work please contact us on Joe's e-mail address below

Joseph Appleyard's
Art Gallery Sites
NOVEMBER 2006 SAW US REACH A MAJOR MILESTONE WHEN WE POSTED JOE'S
300th
EXAMPLE OF WORK
(EXCLUDING SKETCHES)

Joe kept remarkably good records of his work and with extensive research we have been able to source over 300 examples of his work.

Much of this coloured work was published in "Holly Leaves", the Christmas edition of "Sport and Country" and "Dalesman" Magazines, which can be viewed in Art Galleries 1 and 2.

Joe's paintings are far flung. One of his earliest paintings, that of Adel Church, Leeds, known to be in South Africa in the early nineties, has been rediscovered in his home county of Yorkshire and only fifteen miles from Adel.

For those of you not having access to Broadband

"Riding through the Ridings"

This site contains Joe's full transcript and most of the illustrations for his unpublished book "Riding through the Ridings", which was to have been published in 1947 and was still being written in 1959!

Quite why it was taking so long we don't know - possibly the pressure of family life?

Other Joseph Appleyard Sites

These sites give a more detailed insight into Joe's life through his manuscripts, newspaper articles, personal recollections and hopefully other sources yet to be discovered.

Since these sites were posted in April 2002, we have managed to obtain information and illustrations from quite a number of sources and are constantly on the lookout for more work through the Net, Private Collectors, Auction Houses and both Private and Public Art Galleries.
